ReWear Ballina Workshop: Slow Stitching for Repairs and Upcycling

Visitors and locals alike are invited to slow down and get creative at this hands-on ReWear Ballina workshop, hosted by Ballina Shire Council and led by local textile artist Sue from Playing With Fibre.

Over three mindful hours, participants will be introduced to the meditative and sustainable practice of slow stitching — a gentle, expressive way to repair, upcycle and personalise clothing. The workshop explores techniques inspired by Indian Kantha, Japanese Boro, and traditional European embroidery, showing how simple stitches can breathe new life into tired fabrics or turn a flaw into a feature.

Guests are encouraged to bring along preloved fabrics and threads, though all essential materials — including needles, pins, and a calico base — will be provided. Sue will also share her own collection of naturally dyed fabrics and threads for those wishing to experiment with colour and texture.

By the end of the session, participants will leave with a deeper appreciation for handcrafting and the confidence to apply these slow stitching techniques at home.

Small group setting with a maximum of 12 participants. Adults only (18+).

All materials provided, though personal fabrics are welcome

This intimate creative experience offers a chance to reconnect with craft traditions, reduce textile waste, and enjoy a relaxed morning of making — all in the heart of Ballina’s thriving creative community.
