Ballina Public Art – Swamp Wallabies

Perched on Banyan Hill, the Swamp Wallabies stand as graceful guardians of Ballina’s natural landscape. Created from corten steel by artist Matt Hill, the sculptures capture the beauty and quiet strength of these native Australian animals.

As sunlight shifts and weather changes, the surfaces evolve — casting fresh shadows and revealing new details. The weathered steel both contrasts and complements the environment, symbolising the enduring presence and value of wildlife within the built world.

Matt Hill is an award-winning Australian sculptor known for his mesmerising corten steel creations. A carpenter by trade, Matt combines craftsmanship with digital precision, transforming flat metal sheets into intricate 3D forms. His signature works include large-scale animal figures and geometric light sculptures that blend art, engineering, and imagination. Since winning Best Small Sculpture at the Albert Park Art Exhibition in 2013, Matt has become a feature artist at exhibitions across Australia.
