Three Renaissance works offer a diversity in styles of polyphony: the English Byrd’s yearning Ne Irascaris, Domine, the Italian Lotti’s devoted Crucifixus, and Flemish Josquin’s tender pilgrimage Ave Christe, immolate. Bruckner’s 19th-century motet Os Justi recalls these older polyphonic forms, and a more ancient modal tonality. Complementing the polyphonic works, Messiaen’s 20th-century jewel O Sacrum Convivium bids us to come together in warm homophonic harmonies.
