Newrybar Community Hall

Steeped in history and full of character, Newrybar Community Hall has been at the heart of village life since it was built in 1899 as the Newrybar School of Arts. For more than 120 years, it has hosted dances, concerts, travelling picture shows, weddings and community celebrations, while witnessing significant moments such as the arrival of electricity in the village in 1934.

Today, the hall continues to welcome weddings, markets, workshops and community events, preserving its rich heritage while remaining a vibrant gathering place. Set in one of the Northern Rivers' most picturesque villages, it's the perfect place to experience the timeless charm and welcoming spirit of Newrybar.

Meerschaum Vale Hall

Surrounded by the rolling countryside of Meerschaum Vale, this century-old community hall is a true local gathering place. Throughout the year it comes alive with community events, art workshops and its popular annual Curry Night, all helping preserve the hall's rich history and welcoming spirit.

Beyond community events, it's also a sought-after venue for boutique weddings, family celebrations and private functions, making it another hidden gem to discover while exploring the Ballina Hinterland.

Wardell District War Memorial Hall

Located in the riverside village of Wardell, this historic hall continues to welcome locals and visitors for a range of community events throughout the year.

As a host venue for Woodford Small Halls concerts, Wardell District War Memorial Hall  has welcomed talented musicians from across Australia and around the world, while also playing an important role in village life through regular community gatherings and special events.

Rous Mill Hall

Surrounded by rolling green hills southwest of Alstonville, Rous Mill Hall is a much-loved local gathering place with plenty of country charm. From live music and markets to special celebrations and community events, the hall continues to bring people together while welcoming visitors to experience a slower pace of life. Take the scenic drive through winding rural roads, explore the surrounding villages and discover the warm hospitality and timeless character that make this corner of the Northern Rivers so memorable.

More Than a Night Out

What makes these halls so special isn't just the events. It's the experience.

There are no giant crowds or distant seats. Instead, you'll find friendly faces, passionate volunteers and welcoming spaces where everyone feels part of the occasion.

For generations, these halls have been places where communities gather to celebrate, connect and create memories. At Pearces Creek Hall, one of the earliest recorded events was a fundraising concert held on 14 May 1897. Community members performed the Sailors Hornpipe, the Highland Fling and a Clog Dance, while local records recall evenings where dancing continued until daylight.

Back then, community halls were the social heart of rural life. More than 125 years later, they continue to play that role, preserving a tradition that still brings locals and visitors together today.

Keep an Eye on What's On

These halls might not have something happening every weekend, but when they do, they're well worth knowing about. Their smaller size, historic character and strong community connections make for memorable nights out – and often the chance to catch local and touring performers somewhere a little different.

So next time you're looking for live music, a workshop, market or community event, broaden the search beyond the usual venues. You might be surprised by what's happening at a hall just down the road.
