Dog-Friendly Guide to the Ballina Coast & Hinterland

The Ballina Shire is a tail-wagging paradise for outdoor lovers and their four-legged sidekicks. From sandy paws on our sun-drenched beaches to leash-led adventures through lush hinterland, Ballina serves up a huge range of dog-friendly experiences that’ll have your pup barking with joy.

Dog-Friendly Beaches & Off-Leash Areas

Ballina is blessed with some of the most stunning beaches in the region — and better yet, many are dog-friendly.

  • Angels Beach & Sharpes Beach, East Ballina

These long, beautiful stretches of coastline are ideal for morning or sunset strolls. Dogs are welcome on leash to help protect our precious shorebirds who nest along these beaches.

  • An absolute favourite among locals and visitors alike, this beach is off-leash north of the surf club, giving your dog plenty of space to run, roll and chase the waves.

  • The Spit, Ballina

Right along the Richmond River, this sandy stretch is a fantastic spot for dogs who love a paddle and a dig. It’s a popular place for social pups, especially at low tide.

  • Take a scenic drive into the hinterland and stretch your legs on the peaceful forest trails around the dam. Dogs are allowed on leash — and they’ll love the sounds, smells and shade of this tranquil reserve.

Dog-Friendly Dining, Stays & Services

Many local cafés have outdoor seating perfect for pooches, and a number of pet-friendly accommodation options mean everyone gets a good night’s sleep.
