Aboriginal Cultural Ways signage with views overlooking the beach

Council has installed a series of interpretive signs that recognise the Aboriginal cultural heritage values along the Ballina coastline. The Aboriginal Cultural Ways project has been a collaboration between Council, Jali LALC and Ballina Shires's Aboriginal community. The project has also been supported by the NSW Office of Environmental and Heritage and the Heritage Council of NSW.

The interpretive signage plinths are a mix of single and double sided signs displaying 22 large panels in total. These panels provide a mix of themes, cultural stories and artwork relating to the East Ballina section of the coastline including:

• Welcome and significance of the place
• Historical events
• Cultural stories
• Landscape features
• Language

A web app has also been developed in conjunction with the signage panels that provides complementary interpretive material.

This project represents the ongoing fostering of the relationship between Council and our local Aboriginal community and builds on the collaborative approach that has been established in the planning and construction of the coastal recreational path that traverses the Declared East Ballina Aboriginal Place.

We have a brochure that you can download  providing information about the local Aboriginal heritage at the East Ballina Aboriginal Place
